HMF carries out 5G infrastructure project in harbour facility in northern Germany
Following a Europe-wide tender, the PORT OF KIEL commissioned HMF Smart Solutions and its partner Airspan to set up a 5G campus network for the two harbour terminals Ostuferhafen and Schwedenkai.
Based on this new infrastructure for super-fast and highly available data transmission, a digital test field will be set up to trial 5G terminal communication and traffic control for roll-on/roll-off traffic. The project was funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI).
HMF Smart Solutions planned, configured, installed and commissioned the 5G campus network for the PORT OF KIEL. This also included integrating the 5G infrastructure into the port’s existing network. HMF’s 5G campus network covers an area of around 564,000 square metres on the PORT OF KIEL site.

PORT OF KIEL is a major Baltic Sea port and an important logistics hub for all kinds of goods, while being the market leader on routes to Norway, western Sweden and the Baltic States. In 2023, the PORT OF KIEL handled 7.9 million tonnes of cargo volume.
The new 5G system for the PORT OF KIEL essentially consists of a redundant 5G core, more than 25 base stations (indoor & outdoor) and a management system for the administration and monitoring of the 5G campus network.
The comprehensive 5G infrastructure at the terminals of the Ostuferhafen and Schwedenkai now enables the integration of a wide range of applications on a real-time data basis in order to network cargo handling along the entire process chain, optimise traffic and goods flows and make them more efficient.
With HMF’s powerful and flexible 5G campus network infrastructure, the PORT OF KIEL is now ideally equipped to fully utilise the potential and opportunities of 5G for port logistics today and in the future.
2023
HMF Smart Solutions has equipped the PORT OF KIEL with a 5G campus network. The state-of-the-art, innovative communication solution is the basis for a digital test field in the area of roll-on/roll-off traffic (RoRo) at the two Kiel harbour terminals Ostuferhafen and Schwedenkai. The high-performance 5G campus network forms the technological foundation for the step-by-step digitalisation and networking of the entire goods handling process chain.
HMF Smart Solutions have proven to be a dynamic and process-oriented partner who have accompanied and successfully completed the project with great expertise.
