TETRA radio infrastructure expanded for biggest soccer festival 2022
The State of Qatar, located on the Arabian Peninsula, hosted the largest football tournament in the world in November/December 2022. 32 national teams competed in a total of 64 matches, in eight stadiums across Doha and surrounding areas, vying for the trophy.
In order to guarantee the safety of spectators, players and volunteers at all times and to ensure a smooth event, the Qatari network operator Ooredoo made available its nationwide ACCESSNET®-T-IP radio system from HMF Smart Solutions for the duration of the event. To ensure full network coverage in all areas relevant to the world’s largest football festival, HMF Smart Solutions also equipped the new stadiums built especially for the event with TETRA technology (high capacity DIB-R5 advanced) and integrated it into the existing network.
During the event, security forces, the organisation team and its countless volunteers, as well as numerous users from the fields of logistics and transport and many others communicated via the TETRA network.
The state-of-the-art ACCESSNET®-T IP infrastructure proved that it can easily handle an extremely high payload with many user groups (more than 1,000 radio subscribers) while maintaining high availability.
With HMF’s PoC solution PTTconnect, Ooredoo has specifically provided transport users (e. g. for the shuttle buses) with more communication options through additional radio
coverage, capacity and redundancy over the commercial 4G/5G mobile radio network with important PMR benefits such as push-to-talk group calling functionality.

For soccer games in Doha and surrounding areas, the network was expanded to provide full coverage of new stadiums and specially-designated areas to ensure maximum availability and greater capacity. A PTTconnect solution was also used during the event.
HMF maintenance support services during the tournament
During the tournament, an HMF team on site as well as an established back office in Germany supported network operator Ooredoo during operation and was on hand to provide technical support when needed.
